And God said, “Let the earth put forth vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit…” And it was so….And God saw that it was good. (Genesis 1:11-13)
Why compost? Food waste accounts for up to half of home garbage and when food waste is sent to landfills, it takes up space and creates methane, a greenhouse gas 80 times more powerful than carbon dioxide. Greenhouse gases are making our summers hotter. And the rich compost can decrease the need for fertilizer for your houseplants or gardens.
Ways to compost:
1. Make a 3x3x3 foot enclosure in the yard for yard and kitchen plant trimmings https://dontwastethecrumbs.com/composting-basics-for-beginners/
2. Sign up for a weekly pick-up compost service. (available in Cincinnati; not in our area currently)
3. Take your waste to a community composting program. There is a drop-off site in Covington. This is an excellent option for renters. https://www.queencitycommons.com/compost-service/compost-drop-off/
4. Purchase a home composter. (Pricier at first but may be more economical over time than the community compost program. My back yard composter had an awful odor) I have a Lomi which I will bring with the compost it produces next week to demonstrate. https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/appliances/g60373874/best-countertop-composter/
5. Sign up to help the non-profit Last Mile which picks up edible food that would be thrown away and delivers it to shelters. For instance, nearly expired food from Krogers or UDF delivered to Henry Hosea House where meals are prepared everyday. https://lastmilefood.org/
